Natroma advise customers to research each essential oil, before attempting to use on the skin (diluted in a suitable carrier). The following is for guidance only, and makes no medical recommendations:
* Important please read contra-indication advice before ordering these essential oils.
Elemi canarium luzonicum - 10ml
This is an essential oil that comes from a tree resin (like Frankincense and Myrrh), and it's been used for centuries in skincare for it's energising and healing properties. It has traditionally been used as an alternative to Frankincense essential oil. It has a clean, mild aroma which also supports respiratory issues and is reputed to be calming and a good choice when coping with emotional issues.
Eucalyptus citriodora - 10ml
A lovely lemon scented variety of eucalyptus, considered milder than some of the other eucalyptus essential oils.
Eucalyptus globulus - 10ml
This form of eucalyptus is one the one that we recognise in traditional cold remedies. It has a fresh, menthol aroma which is quite penetrating and is useful to use when there is respiratory congestion such as with colds, catarrh and sinusitis. May also be used in aromatherapy massage oil blends, can support muscular aches. Do not apply to or near children's faces.
Eucalyptus radiata - 10ml
Eucalyptus radiate has a milder, sweeter uplifting aroma than many of the eucalyptuses. It has similar therapeutic properties, so can still be used as a decongestant but is a nice option where a milder aroma is preferred. Do not apply to or near to children's faces.
Eucalyptus smithii - 10ml
We supply the mildest of the eucalyptus varieties, which has a milder aroma and is safer to use with children or the elderly. Has a milder aroma so is commonly used to support respiratory issues such as colds, catarrh and sinusitis and can help with mild asthma. Used in massage oil blends, can support muscular aches. Do not apply to or near to children's faces.
Frankincense boswellia carterii - 10ml
One of our favourite oils, which is reputed to support older skin types improving the skin tone and appearance of wrinkles. It has the ability to aid relaxation, so it's often vapourised during meditation and is said to deepen and slow the breathing - making it helpful for asthma sufferers or during panic attacks.
Geranium Bourbon pelargonium graveolens - 10ml
Geranium is one of our favourite oils and is said to be a cooling, moisturising and hormonally balancing oil often used during menopause and to support PMT. Is often used in skincare products, where it helps to balance oil production and soothe dry or inflamed skin. Use with care during pregnancy. We supply a true geranium bourbon essential oil that has a rich rosy aroma. This is the oil which is diffused in our shop.
Geranium (Egypt) pelargonium graveolens - 10ml
Similar properties to the Geranium Bourbon, but this distillation from Egypt so it does not have such a rosy aroma. We tend to only use this variety of Geranium when we manufacture our soaps, since it not as sweet as the Geranium Bourbon which appears in our bathing and skincare products.
Ginger zingiber officinalis * - 10ml
Has a dry aroma that some find unpleasant, but it is reputed to help with feelings of nausea. Is said to be a warming oil, so can be helpful to use when massaging sore or aching muscles and when trying to release muscle tightness. It is a photo-sensitiser so we'd recommend it's used in low concentrations in aromatherapy massage blends and take extra care during pregnancy. Avoid sun or sunlamp exposure for at least 2 hours after skin application.
Grapefruit citrus paradisi - 10ml
Grapefruit has a lovely bright uplifting aroma, that's said to lift the mood and support stress. It's often used in aromatherapy massage where there is fluid retention and it also supports dull skin conditions. Is mildly phototoxic, so may increase the chance of sunburn if applied immediately before sun exposure.
Jasmine Absolute jasminium officinale * - available in 2ml and 5ml sizes
Rich and luxurious, Jasmine flowers are hand picked at night and are too delicate for steam distillation. Instead a solvent is used extract the Jasmine essence into a thick dark oil that's called an absolute. Each drop is so precious, with a gorgeous heady aroma that's reputed to be an aphrodisiac! We use small amounts of Jasmine in our skincare ranges, since it supports many different skin types including sensitive, older, oily and dry. Jasmine is a treat for the senses instilling a lovely feeling of calm. We'd be the first to admit that it is expensive, but it's worth it! Because it's so concentrated you'd only use this in low dilutions, but take extra care with very sensitive skin. Best avoided during pregnancy.
Juniper juniperus communis * - 10ml
Juniper has a light, fresh uplifting aroma and is often used in aromatherapy to offer a sense of calm whilst lifting the spirits. It is considered to be a clarifying oil, dispelling negativity when diffused in a room. In skincare it is considered an astringent, de-congesting oil traditionally used to support fluid retention, cellulite, and joint pain. Best avoided during pregnancy.
Lavender English lavendula angustifolia - 10ml
English Lavender is not as sweet as French Lavender, because it is grown at a lower altitude, but has the same uses and properties. Choose this variety if you prefer a slight more herbaceous aroma.
Lavender French lavandula angustifolia - 10ml
We supply a true French lavender, widely regarded as the most versatile essential oil that is available. It's one of the few oils that can be applied neat to the skin during emergencies, since it's antiseptic qualities have been shown to cool mild burns or scalds and support minor skin abrasions. It has a reputation for being sedative, and when used in low dilutions can assist insomnia and aid relaxation. Is helpful in massage oil blends for muscular aches and can support times of stress.
Lavendin lavendula x intermedia - 10ml
Lavendin is a hybrid of true lavender so has a herbaceaous aroma that's fresher than true lavender. It tends to be more stimulating so supports aromatherapy massage for muscular aches. Interestingly we find that many people think this is true lavender when they first smell the bottle - this is because many of the lavender varieties that are grown in our gardens are actually hybrids of spike lavender. This a nice choice for vaporisation around the home.
Lemon citrus limon (distilled) * - 10ml
Refreshing and antiseptic, lemon is a good choice for use in the kitchen (cleaning work surfaces, refreshing dishcloths etc), but it is also reputed to have diuretic and astringent qualities that are useful for supporting minor skin disorders and areas of poor circulation. Expressed Lemon essential oil is considered to be mildly phototoxic, so we stock the safer distilled oil. We'd suggest you use only low dilutions on the skin when using an expressed lemon oil, avoiding sun or sunlamp exposure for at least 2 hours after skin application.
Lemongrass cymbopogon citratus * - 10ml
With its fresh lemony aroma lemongrass is popular for use around the home as an room freshener. It is said to be antiseptic and stimulant, but can cause dermal irritation due to it's high citral content. It can be used in aromatherapy treatments for muscular aches, but we'd recommend that it's used in very low dilutions due to the risk of allergic reaction for certain skin types.
Lemon Myrtle backhousia citriodora * 10ml
Lemon Myrtle has a calming pleasant lemon aroma that has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. Best used in low dilution if applied to the skin, and avoid during pregnancy.
Lime citrus aurantifolia (distilled) - 10ml
Bright and uplifting, lime is astringent, antiseptic and a stimulant. Ours is a distilled oil making it safe for skin application, since there's no risk of a photo toxic reaction. It makes a lovely fresh addition to a blend.
Our aromatherapy grade essential oils are supplied in generous 10ml sized amber glass bottles to extend their shelf life, fitted with a dropper attachment. Our prices reflect the varying costs associated with producing different types of essential oil and are subject to change. Our oils are suitable for creating home massage blends (they must be diluted in a suitable carrier oil), in the bath (again diluted in a carrier oil before adding to the water) or for vaporisation in an oil burner or for adding to our fragrant decorations.
Each bottle is supplied with a leaflet which gives important safety information including recommended dilutions and contra-indications for each oil.
We do not recommend that essential oils are applied neat to the skin (except for a couple of oils in emergency situations), and bottles should be stored cool, dark and away from children or animals. Never ingest essential oils - this is dangerous and can cause long term harm / poisoning. Dispose of old and unused essential oils carefully (never pour down the sink), since when fully concentrated most are hazardous to the environment.
Remember that essential oils are volatile and some can be highly flammable (some have a low flash point), so do not leave items that have essential oils dripped on them near to ignition sources or in direct sunlight. Do not drip essential oils onto fabric, since it can create a fire hazard if fabrics are not thoroughly cleaned at 60C in a washing machine. Do not tumble dry fabrics with essential oils since there have been instances of house fires being caused by essential oils igniting inside the tumble drier when it reaches high drying temperatures.
Neat essential oils are extremely concentrated, so wipe away any spillages immediately since they may damage polished and natural surfaces. Always wash your hands after handling essential oils.
Take extra care when selecting and using essential oils during pregnancy, and where there are pre-existing health conditions.
Please note that citrus essential oils oxidise quickly, so have a shorter shelf life than other essential oils. Older citrus oils will still be fine to use in oil burners, but caution should be exercised with skin application.
